Others
*Carbonite and MOZY is controlled with special backup software that
copies files from your installed hard drive(s) to their file server.
The system is designed so you cannot store anything on their server
that isn't on your local hard drive(s). If you remove something from your hard
drive the backup software will remove it from the backup server after 30 days.
This is not a solution for freeing up your disk space.
Follow-Up: I tried Carbonite in December of 2007. I was attempting to backup
approximately 100 gigs which I was told by their tech support would not be a
problem. It took about two months for 95% of this volume to transfer when the
system broke down. Their tech support people were persistent but provided no
plausible recommendations. A backup system should provide above average stability
which I wasn't experiencing with Carbonite. It reached the point where
it was consuming too much of my time to troubleshoot with them to no avail so
I had to give up and cancel the service. They refunded the fee right away. Carbonite
seems like a very good idea but it didn't work for me. I purchased a 500 GB external
hard drive for $120.
